Winter now has a firm grip on South Tyrol as well, but with the right equipment cold temperatures are neither an obstacle nor an excuse for not spending a couple of hours outdoors.
Gloves
Nothing is more unpleasant than cold fingers with which you cannot open a zip or put on a hat. With warm gloves you can build an igloo for hours on end even at freezing temperatures, without your hands getting cold. Or perhaps a lighter model is enough, if it is only for a short walk through the snow-covered forest.
Shoes
Well wrapped up, it is easier to walk through the snow. The right footwear does not only take care of warm feet, it also offers good grip on snow and ice and keeps the water out. This is of great importance both in everyday urban winter life and on alpine outings into the world of ice climbing and freezing expeditions.
Hats
A warm head is decisive for storing the warmth in your body. That is why it is advisable to wear a hat in winter. A comfortable blended fabric of wool and nylon in particular keeps the head warm even at freezing temperatures. In the same way a thin hat or a headband can be an advantage during sporting exertion.
Clothing against the cold
Warm clothing does not always have to be thick – the onion principle makes it possible to wear several warm layers on top of one another. A jacket made with synthetic or down insulation is often the most important warm layer. Warm legwear is just as decisive: a shell trouser that keeps out wind and snow, a down trouser that protects the strained leg muscles from cooling down, or a warm winter hiking trouser that is fitted, for example, with a warming liner.
