Whether it is a quick training session on the local mountain, a run through light powder snow or an unforgettable Haute Route – ski touring has by now developed into a popular mass sport. The different variations are almost unlimited, and so is the choice of equipment. But watch out, not all combinations work in practice the way you picture them in theory. Because binding, ski and boot form one system that belongs together. A triangular relationship that can be quite full of conflict when it comes to function and safety.
One tempting combination is this: wide skis for plenty of float in fresh snow, plus a binding that is as light as possible and a light boot for long ascents. Here you should take care not to overdo it. Light pin bindings have drawbacks in terms of safety & comfort and power transmission and, at too high a speed and in the wrong field of use, they can definitely represent a safety risk. On the other hand they are a good deal lighter, easier to handle and more comfortable on the way up. The rule here: for classic ski tours a light pin binding, for freeride adventures a more robust frame binding.
The right boot to go with ski and binding is fundamental to getting the system to work. Bear in mind that there are no uniform standards for ski touring boots. Not all boots are compatible with every ski touring binding. Boots with a shortened sole ledge at the toe and heel are not compatible with frame bindings. Sometimes it can even happen that pin boots do not work smoothly with conventional pin bindings. The differences show up above all in the thickness and the rocker (slight curve) of the sole, in the geometry of the toe and the heel area, and in the shape and position of the inserts that the pins snap into. Millimetres can often make the difference here. Keep in mind as well that light ski touring boots are softer and have poorer power transmission, which is why they are not suitable for very wide skis.
