Call to inspect the EDELRID Mega Jul

Background

A MEGA JUL has been found in which the eyelet for belaying a follower has a defect.

It cannot currently be ruled out that further devices with defects from the batch concerned are still in circulation. The defect is a change in the metal surface which is easy to spot during a visual inspection. These surface changes can be of differing depth and can result in reduced strength.

Inspection

Please proceed as follows for the inspection:

1. Check the batch number

Check the batch number. The batch number is located on the upper right-hand side of the device.

Devices with the batch number 04/20 MUST be inspected. Devices with other batch numbers DO NOT need to be inspected.

2. Visual inspection

Check the surface of the metal body, and the eyelet for belaying a follower in particular, for irregularities such as folds, steps, cracks or similar.

Examples of possible defects on the MEGA JUL:

Devices that show comparable surface changes must not be used. If you find a defect after inspecting your device, please contact our customer service by e-mail: service@edelrid.de. We will send you a return slip which lets you send the device to us for inspection free of charge.

Devices that show a step or an edge at this point as pictured here can continue to be used. You do not need to do anything.

FAQ

1. Where do I find the batch number?

The batch number is located on the upper right-hand side of the device. It is engraved or lasered there in the format MM/YY.

2. The batch number on my device is no longer legible.

The visual inspection takes very little effort. If the batch number can no longer be identified clearly, a visual inspection is advisable regardless of the batch number.

3. Can a defect like this also develop later during use?

No. The steel used is extremely tough; once the manufacturing process is finished, the structure can no longer be changed by mechanical influences.

4. Why is only this one batch affected?

While investigating this case it was found that a deviation from the prescribed process had occurred in the quality assurance measures for this batch.

5. Is the MICRO JUL affected as well?

No. MICRO JUL, MEGA JUL SPORT, JUL2 and GIGA JUL are not affected.

6. Was there an accident?

No. The device concerned was discovered during an inspection.

7. If I cannot carry out the inspection myself or am unsure, can I send my MEGA JUL to EDELRID for inspection?

Yes, if you are unsure the MEGA JUL from batch 04/20 can be sent in for inspection. Please contact our customer service about this: service@edelrid.de.

8. What do I do if I discover a defect on my MEGA JUL?

Please contact our customer service by e-mail: service@edelrid.de. We will send you a return slip which lets you send the device to us for inspection free of charge. Should your device be defective, we will replace it free of charge.
